Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) is often the most unfamiliar part of the 11+ exam for both children and parents. Unlike Verbal Reasoning and Maths, which build directly on school subjects, NVR uses shapes, patterns, and diagrams — and is not explicitly taught in primary school. Yet it counts equally in the GL Assessment. This guide explains what NVR tests, why it matters, and how to help your child become confident with it.

What is Non-Verbal Reasoning?

Non-Verbal Reasoning tests spatial awareness, pattern recognition, and logical thinking using visual information rather than words or numbers. It is designed to assess a form of intelligence that is not dependent on language skills or mathematical knowledge — making it particularly useful for identifying academic potential in children from a wide range of backgrounds.

Because NVR is not taught as a subject in primary school, many children encounter it for the first time only when they begin 11+ preparation. This makes early practice especially important.

GL Assessment NVR Question Types

Shape Series

A sequence of shapes follows a pattern — changes in size, rotation, shading, number of sides, or some combination. The child must identify what comes next. These require careful observation and the ability to track multiple changing variables simultaneously.

Shape Analogies

Similar to verbal analogies but using shapes: "Shape A is to Shape B as Shape C is to ___." The relationship between the first pair must be identified and applied to the second pair.

Odd Shape Out

Four or five shapes are presented and the child must identify which one does not fit with the others. The connection might be based on number of sides, symmetry, shading, size, or orientation.

Most Like

A target shape is presented alongside several options. The child must find which option shares the most properties with the target shape.

Shape Codes

Each shape in a set has a code based on its properties (for example, S = square, B = black, L = large). The child must decode the pattern and apply the code to a new shape. This is one of the more complex NVR question types and requires methodical, systematic thinking.

💡 Key Insight

Many children who struggle with NVR initially find it becomes one of their stronger areas after consistent practice. Unlike vocabulary — which takes years to build — pattern recognition can improve rapidly with the right kind of focused practice.

Why Do Children Find NVR Difficult?

There are several common reasons:

How to Help Your Child with NVR

Start with one question type at a time

Do not attempt all NVR question types simultaneously. Master Shape Series before moving to Shape Analogies, then Odd Shape Out, and so on. Each type has its own logic that becomes clear with focused practice.

Teach a systematic approach

Encourage your child to check each feature of a shape in turn — size, shading, number of sides, orientation, position. A methodical checklist approach prevents missing the key variable that defines the pattern.

Make it visual

Talk through NVR questions out loud. Ask your child to explain what they see and why they chose a particular answer. Verbalising visual reasoning strengthens the thinking process.

Practise little and often

Short daily sessions are more effective than occasional long ones. Ten minutes of NVR practice every day builds familiarity faster than a two-hour session once a week.

NVR and General Intelligence

Non-Verbal Reasoning is sometimes described as a measure of "fluid intelligence" — the ability to reason and solve novel problems without drawing on previously learned knowledge. This is why it is such a valued component of the 11+ exam: it can identify potential that might not yet be reflected in school performance.

Children who struggle with reading or whose first language is not English often perform well in NVR. Equally, strong readers who have not practised NVR can be caught off guard by it. The lesson for every child is the same: practise consistently, and do not leave NVR to chance.
